Dr Who, alias Jon Pertwee, has, as devoted viewers will know, recently been battling a company of giant green maggots. Yesterday at the London Hilton Hotel he faced the equally terrifying prospect of judging the work of six housewives who had concocted special dishes for him in a competition organized by the Co-op.
He must be regarded as a fishy personality, since five of the six dishes were based on fish. (The sixth was based on oranges.) The women spent the morning trying to master the Hilton's kitchen equipment under the sharp eye of Oswald Mair, the head chef. A publicity man said Mair had, in traditional fashion, been " throwing tantrums all morning" because of the television cameras in his kitchen.
The winner was Mrs Edna James, 63, from Ely, Cambs, who served up Beehive Shrimp Croustades. She won a cooker worth £200. and a kitchen worth about £1,000.
The most attractive entrant was 74-year-old Mrs Elsie Fletcher, a joint second prize winner (a £200 cooker and a £500 kitchen). Mrs Fletcher, from Clitheroe, Lancashire. cooked baked halibut with mussel sauce.
She said she felt a bit out of her depth. " Our tastes are more simple than the tastes of these gourmets." The kitchen of the Hilton was " not a bit like being at home ".
