[edit]

I would like to express my sincere disappointment that WPSX-TV has chosen

to move the MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour on PBS to the most unfortunate hour of 11 p.m. This fine program provides one of the few intelligent alternatives to the often superficial and sensationalistic news coverage of the major commerical networks. By broadcasting MacNeil-Lehrer at such a late hour, WPSX has effectively deprived many viewers of this alternative.

It seems that the reason for this move was to enable "Dr. Who" to be shown at a more convenient time for school-age viewers. I am myself an avid "Dr. Who" fan, and can certainly understand why younger children might appreciate the schedule change. Yet by substituting entertainment programming for news, it almost seems as though WPSX-TV has succumbed to the very commercialism of the commercial networks. In the face of recent federal budget cuts, can this be an attempt to generate additional public support at fundraising time? I noted with interest during recent "Festivals" that a substantial number of pledges seemed to come from "Dr. Who" fans (including myself).

I urge WPSX to reconsider its scheduling decision. If MacNeil-Lehrer were returned to its regular time, "Dr. Who" might still be shown in the early evening, between 7 and 8 p.m., or perhaps at 5 p.m. Such a schedule would allow young and old alike to watch Britain's best science fiction at a reasonable hour, while still providing the kind of in-depth news analysis essential to a university community. As a "continuing education and community service," WPSX-TV has an obligation to serve all its viewers with balanced programming. BRIAN D. STEWART State College
