RARELY have I watched an episode of television and had less idea about what was going on than Dr Who: The Day of the Doctor. Apparently the decision that tormented the Doctor — saving the universe from Daleks by destroying the planet Gallifrey — was reversible by time travel ... or something. So why did he endure all those endless angst-ridden episodes? I'm still bemused.
Ah well, as my daughters pointed out with a roll of the eyes: a. unlike Doctor Who, I've watched every second of Homeland and still don't have a clue what's going on, and b. I'm not a "Whovian". Apparently 10.2 million of us are though. That was the extraordinary overnight ratings figure for the anniversary special, despite it being up against X Factor. Catch-up numbers will be huge too. Fifty years! I may not know my Tom Baker from my Matt Smith but I do know it's a success story that won't be exterminated.
