THE BBC is travelling back 27 years in time to save Dr Who from ailing ratings.

Series head Peter Gregeen has asked Verity Lambert, the programme's first producer, and Daleks creator Terry Nation to devise new story lines.

Other writers from Dr Who's heyday, when it won 10 million viewers, are pressing the BBC to hand the series over to them for resuscitation.

Victor Pemberton, who last wrote for the series in 1970, said: "It must regain the tension it used to have which would make everyone want to find out what would happen next week."

Lambert and Nation will not only devise a new script but also advise on new casting because Sylvester McCoy, who has played the part of the Time Lord for the last three years, is reluctant to continue.
