Dr. Who, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, has the honor of being the longest running sf show on television. Hearn (Cinema & Television Research Centre, De Montfort Univ., Leicester; The Avengers: A Celebration--50 Years of a Television Classic ) wanted to create an "imaginary museum" of photos, collectibles, and memorabilia never seen before interspersed with the informative text. He has done an incredible job of accomplishing this. The chronological chapters focus on the main theme of each season's story line, discussing writers, producers, special effects, and aliens. Books such as Cavan Scott and Mark Wright's Dr. Who Who-ology concentrate more on the modern series and Dr. Who trivia, while Hearn's exhaustively researched book covers the series from start to present. Comparisons of the 11 Dr. Who actor portrayals and the changing culture from the early 1960s until now are also examined. The text is enhanced by all of the photos Hearn has brilliantly put together. VERDICT This is an exceptional book; however, its appeal may be limited to fans of the show.--Rosalind Dayen, South Regional Lib., Pembroke Pines, FL
