It's hard for my longtime Whovian heart to conceive (I, who dreaded the reinventing of my beloved goofy British sci-fi TV show of the '70s and '80s), but this second series of the new Doctor Who is even more thrilling than the first, although it was tough seeing the wonderful new Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, leave after only one season. Scottish actor David Tennant takes up the Time Lord mantle with cocky aplomb, bringing a youthful exuberance and old-soul mettle to the role of the 900-year-old adventuring time traveler. This 2005-06 second season batch of 14 episodes intensifies the mysteries introduced in the first season—just what did happen to the Doctor in the years since we last saw him in the old 20th-century show?—while also chronicling the sweet agony of the Doctor's unrequited love affair with his traveling companion Rose (Billie Piper). Satire and sentiment sit side by side here in this fine series that is as good as contemporary entertainment gets. DVD extras include audio commentary, video diaries, deleted scenes, featurettes, and outtakes. Highly recommended. Editor's Choice. (M. Johanson)
