[edit]

MONSTERS were unleashed onto the streets of the capital yesterday to promote Cardiff's latest tourist attraction.

Tickets are selling fast for the Doctor Who Experience, which is set to open in Cardiff Bay next month.

Commuters at Cardiff Central train station were the first to be confronted with the TV show nasties after a Cyberman turned up in the station concourse.

And while many took a wide detour to avoid the metal-clad monster, Doctor Who super-fan Dave Prince, 36, squared up to the 6ft cyborg.

Dave, who has applied for a job at the new exhibition, travelled down from Pontypridd after hearing of the stunt on Twitter.

After a tension-filled confrontation, during which he was "deleted" by the silent Cyberman, he said: "We had a stare-off and I was deleted.

"I've been a fan since I was a kid - my first Doctor was Tom Baker - so this was a pretty exciting experience."

Ellie Harris, 18, of Brecon, and friend Valery Shpak, 19, from Ukraine, were on their way to the airport to go on holiday.

"At first, I thought he was the robot from Star Wars, then I realised he's from Doctor Who," said Ellie, who posed for a picture with the metal monster.

"He looked scary from afar, but when you got close up, he wasn't that bad."

Schoolchildren arriving for a tour of Cardiff Castle were given the surprise of their life when they were greeted by two of the BBC Wales show's scariest villains - a Scarecrow and a Silent.

The monsters, played by specialist actors wearing actual costumes from the show, lurched after the children, from Blaenhonddan Primary School in Neath, into the castle.

The evil pair later made an appearance in Cardiff Bay, where they met pupils from Penarth's Cogan Primary School outside the Senedd and joined a Dalek from the show to pose for pictures outside the Wales Millennium Centre. An Ood also made an appearance.

The award-winning Doctor Who Experience won rave reviews as a temporary exhibition at London's Olympia and organisers announced their decision to make Cardiff its permanent home in May.

Visitors to the interactive exhibition will be able to star in their very own Doctor Who adventure, featuring Daleks, Weeping Angels and a replica of the eleventh Doctor's Tardis.

When it opens on July 20, visitors will also be able to see the world's most extensive collection of original Doctor Who costumes and artefacts stretching back almost 50 years to the very first series of the show.
