Andrea Kate Harris and David Richard Smith were married Saturday in New York. Andra M. Miller, the president of the New York Society for Ethical Culture, officiated at the Boathouse in Central Park.

The bride, 38, will continue to use her name professionally. She is an actress who works in London and Johannesburg. She is a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and in its 2008-9 season played Titania in "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and Cornelia (a female version of the courtier Cornelius) in "Hamlet." On television, she had a role in two episodes of the BBC series "Dr. Who," and she appeared in the 2008 film "Last Chance Harvey."

Ms. Harris is a daughter of Kate C. Harris and Donald S. Harris of Osprey, Fla. Her father retired as the vice president for public affairs and communications for Philip Morris International in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her mother, a psychiatric social worker, retired as the executive director of the Northside Center for Child Development in New York, which provides therapeutic and educational services for children. The center was founded by the bride's maternal grandparents, the late Mamie Phipps Clark and the late Kenneth B. Clark, psychologists and educators whose research with black children was used by the N.A.A.C.P. in arguments to the Supreme Court that led in 1954 to the landmark decision in Brown v. the Board of Education.

The bridegroom, 35, is the Africa correspondent for The Guardian, the London newspaper, and works in Johannesburg. He graduated from the University of Leeds.

He is the son of Celia Smith and Les Smith of Eastbourne, England. The bridegroom's mother retired as a teaching assistant at the Balcarras School in Cheltenham, Gloucesterhire. His father, also retired, was an insurance broker with MR Ratcliffe Consultants, a brokerage in Cheltenham.

The couple met in London in 2009 at the offices of The Observer, The Guardian's Sunday newspaper, where the bridegroom was a reporter and the bride was doing temp work after the Royal Shakespeare Company's season.

Mr. Smith had seen the bride in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Hamlet," and had waited through a January night to get a ticket to "Hamlet," which starred David Tennant, who also played The Doctor when Ms. Harris appeared on "Dr. Who."

Mr. Smith said someone pointed him out to Ms. Harris and told her: " 'See that guy over there? He's your biggest fan and he slept outside all night to see the show.' She was not hugely impressed."

Ms. Harris said that at first she thought "he was a David Tennant fan or a 'Dr. Who' weirdo."

On her last day at The Observer, they had what she said was a "very awkward conversation" in an elevator but by the end of the ride "we had exchanged e-mails."

That led to a date. Ms. Harris said they were talking "about what neighborhoods we had both lived in in London" and gradually realized that they had both been tenants in the same North London apartment — she moved in after he moved out.

They went out a few more times, but their time in London was rapidly approaching its expiration date. Shortly before they met, Mr. Smith had accepted the correspondent's job in Africa.

"Literally one week later I was emigrating to the other side of the world," he said. "That could have been the end of it, but we stayed in touch."

Ms. Harris visited him in South Africa. "I was supposed to stay for two weeks, and I stayed for a month," she said. She finally had to leave because "Hamlet" was about to be filmed for television.

She moved to Johannesburg last October, and in November he proposed on the banks of the Zambezi River in Zambia.
