New Doctor Matt dresses like a geography teacher

NEW Doctor Who Matt Smith films his first episodes — looking more like a geography teacher on a field trip than a timelord battling aliens.

The latest Doc seemed to have travelled back in time to the place fashion forgot.

He donned a fusty tweed jacket with elbow patches. braces and a bow tie. Matt, 26, also wore beetle-crusher black boots and rolled-up trousers.

The preppy look recalled bow-tie wearing Patrick Troughton. who played the second Doctor in the 1960s. Current Doctor. David Tennant, has described his own sharp suited and baseball boot look as "geek chic" —but, if anything. Matt seems to have outdone him in nerdishness.

Beauty

Accompanying Matt on his adventures is new companion Amy Pond, played by red-haired Karen Gillan, 21.

It looked as if the Scots beauty had taken style tips from Tennant as she wore blue baseball boots with her mini-skirt and blazing red jumper.

Karen, Matt and Alex Kingston, 46. who plays the timelord's wife, were snapped during filming for the BBC1 sci-fi show on Southerndown beach at Bridgend in South Wales.

Matt said: "I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show. I'm excited about the future."

Lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffatt said: "Matt and Karen are going to be incredible. Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way."

The 13-episode series is due to be screened next spring.

IT'S THE LORD OF LEEK CHIC

WITH his dickie bow and tweed jacket, the new Doc looks more like a university lecturer than time traveller.

But as with each new incarnation, the latest Timelord is putting his own stamp on proceedings.

The floppy hair and chiselled cheekbones make the new Who's geeky ensemble much more chic.

In fact, the tailored jacket and bow tie look was seen on the menswear catwalks at Moschino and Vuitton.

Even stars like Brad Pitt and Kanye West aren't above a bit of geek chic. Who thought the Doctor would be a style icon?

WHAT THE OTHERS WORE

WILLIAM HARTNELL: Wore an outfit which made him look more like a creepy Victorian undertaker than a hero sent from another planet.

PATRICK TROUGHTON: Impish star was scruffier than previous incarnation. Could be mistaken for an intergalactic gnome.

JON PERTWEE: Suave man of action loved his velvet jacket. Seemed to take his cue from camp stage legend Noel Coward with his frilled shirts.

TOM BAKER: His eccentric fashion sense scared most alien hordes. Combined long scarf with floppy hat and pockets full of jelly babies.

PETER DAVISON: Looked like he had just stepped off a cricket pitch. More subdued outfit than before — except for celery stalk pinned to his chest.

COLIN BAKER: Seemed to get dressed in the dark. Perhaps hoped to dazzle Daleks with his brightly coloured arid mismatched clothes.

SYLVESTER McCOY: Often switched to a brown coat to create a darker mood. Had straw hat and umbrella with a question mark-shaped handle.

CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON: Flair cropped short and a black leather jacket. Dressed more like a Mancunian drug dealer than Doctor Who.

PAUL McGANN: Dressed like Oscar Wilde in a silk waistcoat and dandy's collar. Looked like he was about to star in an Adam Ant video.

DAVID TENNANT: Described by sidekick Donna Noble as a "skinny boy in a suit". He made Converse shoes a hit with sci-fi fans.
