THE Doctor Who exhibition has set up home in Coventry but it's not the first time the Time Lord has visited the city. TV writer Marion McMullen looks back on Coventry's Doctor Who connection.

COVENTRY played host to not one, but two Time Lords when Jon Pertwee and Sylvester McCoy both visited the city.

They appeared together in 1990 for a joint Doctor Who and Star Trek convention at the Novotel Hotel.

Doctor Who's best friend K9 was also there to ward off any Daleks trundling through the hotel corridors at night threatening to "Exterminate."

Jon Pertwee told the Coventry Telegraph: "People need escapism. Something where they can let their imaginations run riot."

Hundreds of fans attended the event and were able to put their questions to the two Doctors at a panel.

Former Doctor Who Colin Baker also visited the city the same year to play a police inspector at the Belgrade Theatre in Agatha Christie whodunnit Spider's Web. He said: "I really enjoyed Doctor Who, but I don't miss the awful locations - freezing September weather, clay pits and Daleks stuck in mud."

Colin, Jon Pertwee and Sylvester McCoy were also back in 1991 for a Doctor Who convention at the Leofric Hotel that attracted around 600 fans. Original costumes were on display.

More recently David Tennant was here in 2006 to film The Shakespeare Code storyline which featured Freema Agyeman as his then new assistant Martha Jones.

They took the Tardis back to the Elizabethan era and ended up filming in the half-timbered buildings at Ford's Hospital in Coventry's Greyfriars Lane and the Lord Leycester Hospital in Warwick.

The episode involved Shakespeare and his "lost" play Love's Labour's Won and marked the first time travel adventure for Martha Jones.
