Exclusive Interview By Chris Kenworthy
Sun special on two space shooting stars
HE IS the new Dr Who. She was the sexiest of space travellers.
But when Peter Davison first met Sandra Dickinson seven years ago, there were no "love at first-sight" stars in their eyes. HE thought she looked too remote and successful for him.
SHE thought he looked too pale.
Sandra, in a voice which makes Minnie Mouse sound gruff, says:
"I knew another bloke in the same play and I fancied being cast opposite him."
Instead she was cast opposite 30-year-old Peter Davison. She still is—as Mrs Davison.
Galaxy
Together, the girl who was Trillian in The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and the man who played lovable vet Tristan Farnon in All Creatures Great And Small, make one of telly's most attractive couples.
After living together, they married two years ago in America.
Since then, telly fame has kept them constantly in the spotlight.
Sandra, the 32-year-old daughter of an American psycho-analyst, had got used to publicity.
She was an advert hit as the girl in white who loved men who smoked St Bruno.
That earned the Davisons a house in Woking. Surrey,
Now Davison himself is ready for the fan worship which will follow his debut as Dr Who, net January.
Comedy
Davison, who appears in the BBC comedy series Sink Or Swim, has based his interpretation of Dr Who on a letter sent in by a young fan.
He says: "The lad said I ought to be like Tristan Farnon, but braver. So that's what I decided to be."
Sandra says: "If we were both doing this well in America, we could retire.
"As it is, we have to save for the taxman!"
NOSTALGIA NOTE: Selected adventures from past Dr Who series will be screened nightly from November to Christmas.
The Five Faces Of Who will involve every Doctor Who from William Hartnell, the first, up to Tom Baker, Davison's predecessor.
