Musical time-warp for Doctor Who

Congratulations to the BBC on the high standard of the new season of Doctor Who. The special effects sequence which opened the first episode was superb.

Unfortunately, the new version of the theme music is terrible. It is feeble, totally lacking the vigour and eerie quality needed for this show. Please return to the Peter Howell version as soon as possible.

Doctor's tonic

After a brilliant new arrangement of the signature tune and a stunning special-effects sequence, it was a pleasure to witness the acting talents of Colin Baker. Nicola Bryant and Michael Jayston for 25 glorious minutes (Doctor Who, 6 September BBC1). Costumes, sets, incidental music, direction - all were top-class, and Robert Holmes's last script for Doctor Who looks set to have been his best. Good grief? Will I be able to wait until next week?!
