[edit]

Fans of Dr. Who, the British-made science fiction series, aren't content to watch their hero on TV. Accordingly, a local fan club, the Ambassadors of Gallifrey, is organizing an all-day Dr. Who Convention, to run from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in the St. Thomas building at 208 Dock St.

Gallifrey, as every "Whovian" knows, is Dr. Who's home planet, and St. Thomas will be made over to look as much like the Doctor's lair as possible.

The Doctor's robot dog K-9, villainous Cybermen and "numerous other aliens" will be roaming around, according to club vice president Jay Mohler.

Fans are erecting mock-ups of the TARDIS, Dr. Who's craft for traveling in time and space (which is camouflaged to look like an English polices call-box).

A costume contest will be held at 7:30 p.m. with a 24-foot Dr. Who scarf us first prize. Traders will be on hand, selling buttons, T-shirts, comics, paperback books jelly-babies (Dr. Who's favorite English candy) and other memorabilia.

Entertainment will include screenings of two Dr. Who movies seldom seen in America: Dr. Who and the Daleks (starring Peter Cushing as the Doctor) and Daleks — Invasion Earth 2160 AD.

Russ Benson will play live music based on the Dr. Who theme from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. Members of the club will present an original revue, Is There a Doctor in the House?, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Admission will be $3 for one day.
