ACTOR Colin Baker is keeping his finger crossed until next month in the hope that Dr Who has a future as well as a past.
BBC boss Michael Grade put the programme on trial by allowing the series currently showing on Saturdays to be made.
He will decide Dr Who's fate next month and the signs look promising because the BBC has been deluged with fan mail applauding the new series.
It's still a nerve-wracking time, however, for 41-year-old Colin, who was stunned and angry when Grade originally shelved the hit series, saying it was too violent and too tired.
I couldn't believe that something as important as Dr Who could be brought to such suummary conclusion.
Reality
"I didn't feel the program bad become too violent, but perhaps that's because I was having so much fun as Dr Who.
"With Dr Who, we've always been very careful to show the reality of violence Even if the Doctor Just gets bumped on the head, we show that it hurts."
When the series was frozen into a time lock 18 months ago. It was the cue for Colin's career to go into limbo, too.
"It was very frustrating for me. I was still under contract to the BBC and being paid for doing nothing, which sounds wonderful but meant I wasn't free to do any other work.
"I had to get permission from the BBC if I wanted to do anything else and they weren't very keen.
The only good thing that came of that period was the chance to spend a lot of time with my new baby, Lucy." Colin's words have added poignancy because he and his young wife, Marion, 30, suffered the heartbreak of losing their lively and apparently healthy six-week-old son, Jack, in a mysterious cot-death two years ago
The return of Dr Who had also added to his sense of well-being. "I'm very relieved that it's back and I hear rumours that another sends is planned," he said.
