LONDON, April 25 (AP)—William Hartnell, a character actor best known for his role as the original "Dr, Who" in a top British television series, died Thursday. He was 67.
Mr. Hartnell made his first movie in 1931 and had his first London stage part the, following year, lie played a tough sergeant major in a succession of wartime movies during World War
Mr. Hartnell was 55 in 1963 when the BBC offered him the part of "Dr. Who," an accentric scientist who travels through time and space with an entourage of youngsters and outwits the Daleks. He kept the role for three years. The series, which had an audience in the United States as well, is still running.
He is survived by his wife, former actress and playwright Heather McIntyre, and their daughter.
