Move Over, Trekkies: Doctor Who's cult is growing -- and spending.
Product tie-ins galore sprout around the British-TV character, the object of a growing U.S. following. There are Doctor Who duffels, mugs, T-shirts, posters, yo-yos, calendars, bumper stickers ("I Love the Doctor") and so on. "I've got anything but a complete line of Doctor Who merchandise," says Henry Friedenberg, a Los Angeles dealer, "but if you bought one of each it would cost a couple of thousand dollars." Many customers plop down $40 or so for piles of Doctor Who paperbacks at Million Dollar Picnic, a store in Cambridge, Mass.
Forbidden Planet, a Manhattan store, says it does "quite well" with more than 70 books on the Doctor's travels through time and space. In Burbank, Calif., Fantasy Kingdom says the market for Doctor Who items "hasn't peaked yet" and is rivaling the lucrative one for Star Trek merchandise.
The TV show even spurs sales of the Doctor's favorite candy -- Jelly Babies -- despite premium prices.
