SOUTH PORTLAND — An animated road show featuring characters from the public television program "Doctor Who" continues its coast-to-coast journey with a two-day stop at the Maine Mall tomorrow and Thursday.
The sophisticated mobile exhibition was built by the British Broadcasting Corp. in support of its television program "Doctor Who," shown by 180 PBS television stations throughout the country. They program is usually seen on WCBB, Channel 10, every Saturday at 9 p.m.
The 23-year-old program is the longest running science fiction show in television history and is the most successful British TV export ever, viewed by over 110 million viewers in approximately 60 countries worldwide.
The roiled show was developed by the BBC after "Doctor Who" began attracting a widespread following in this country.
The characters are housed in a 48-foot trailer. Set behind mirrored reinforced glass, the figures are brought to life through various lighting and sound special effects. The project was the developed Brian Slowman, who is traveling with the exhibition's two-year tour.
"The idea was to create a unique experience using all original pieces that we would present to fans throughout America," Slowman said. "We also hope to expand the audience by presenting an exciting attraction even for people who have never heard of the show."
