APPOINTMENT TV

Peter Capaldi is the new Doctor

WHEN HE WAS 15, PETER Capaldi wrote a letter to the Radio Times praising its coverage of Doctor Who. It was 1973, and Jon Pertwee was the Third Doctor. "Who knows, the country could be invaded by an army of school Daleks!" he speculated. "Ah, but we'd be safe, as we'd have Dr. Who (sic) to protect us!"

If you'd nipped into the TARDIS to tell the young Capaldi that, 40 years later, he would be protecting us as the Twelfth Doctor, he might have taken a leaf out of Malcolm Tucker's book and told you where to shrove your sonic screwdriver.

"I haven't really played Doctor Who since I was nine, in the playground." laughed Capaldi at his unveiling on BBC One (he'll regenerate from Matt Smith in this year's Christmas special). "He's not me yet, but he's reaching out. Hopefully we'll get it together."

And, just to prove this was destiny, his last big-screen role was the sort of sign no self-respecting Time Lord could ignore. Capaldi's character in World War Z? W H.O. Doctor. CH
