Dr Who dropped in new cuts by BBC's timelord

DOCTOR WHO is disappearing from TV for at least 18 months.

The good doctor, who has seen off nasty Daleks, Cyber-men and Ice Warriors over 21 years, met his match yesterday in the Amazing axeman—-BBC-1's new controller Michael Grade.

Grade has already despatched beauty contests, Superstars and the World's Strongest Man.

Now he has ordered Dr. Who—Colin Baker—his assistant Peri—Nicola Bryant to take a rest" once their current adventures in the tardis time machine end next month. The decision, to save cash to make other dramas, shocked both stars.

Nicola said: "It's like being poleaxed. I'm just back from America where 4,000 Dr. Who fans screamed in ecstacy and said: 'You're wonderful."

The pair, who were to start a new series in May, are not due back on screen until Autumn 1986.

But furious fans began bombarding the BBC with complaints last night.

ASSISTANT: Nicola. She was stunned. Picture: BRENDAN MONKS
