AN exhibition and sale of artwork created by the six concept artists working on Doctor Who, Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures opens at the Wales Millennium Centre this week.
Production designer Edward Thomas hopes the show will appeal not just to avid fans of the three series, but also to art lovers across Wales.
He said: "If you're a Doctor Who fan it's a must because you're getting an original piece of artwork, but even if you're not a fan and just enjoy good art, then it's a fantastic opportunity.
"Some people have never seen an episode, but they might buy a piece and put it in their dining room because it would lead to an interesting conversation over dinner."
Thomas was inspired to launch the touring exhibition, currently on display at Portobello Road in London, because he feared the art would otherwise gather dust in a dingy basement.
"It dawned on me that all these drawings go into a BBC archive never to see the light of day again," he said.
A spokesman for the WMC in Cardiff Bay welcomed the forthcoming exhibition saying: "The successful revival of Doctor Who in 2005 has entertained and inspired millions of viewers across the world, thanks to Welsh-born producer and writer Russell T Davies.
"Wales Millennium Centre, in conjunction with Department Six, is delighted to bring the original pre-production artwork of this successful BBC show to the forefront.
"The art exhibition gives an insight into the production process behind the magic, and includes 32 limited edition giclee prints of concept art created for the show by the award-winning art department."
The exhibition and sale features 500 copies of 32 images, priced between £170 and £225. It opens at the WMC in Cardiff Bay tomorrow
