Planet of the Daleks

Jon Pertwee and Katy Manning (as Jo Grant) were at the helm of the Tardis during the 1972/73 series from which this six-part Terry Nation adventure is taken, showing from this week as part of the celebrations of Doctor Who's 30th birthday.

Pertwee had already had one clash with the Daleks. But the actor himself was not greatly enamoured of his metal opponents. "I think the Daleks are boring," he said.

But people love them so I suppose I'm wrong."

Terry Nation, however, had good reason to disagree. He created the Daleks in 1963 for the second Doctor Who story as "hideous machine-like creatures ... legless ... with no human features". Designer Ray Cusick thought up the famous "pepperpot" look. "But," said Nation, "their continued existence meant that I found it impossible to write another successful monster for Doctor Who."

The Tardis lands on a strange planet with the Doctor unconscious, and Jo faces the dangers of an alien jungle.
