No, we're not being ungrammatical. The Who to whom we refer is Dr Who, and although he is actually 750 years old, this month marks the 20th anniversary of the television series which bears his name.

Dr. Who has been airing on North Carolina Public Television for two years but the series has been an element of British culture since 1961. The show is an adventure series in the tradition of Buck Rogers (or rather his British equivalent, Dan Dare). and each adventure is presented in four segments with every episode prior to the conclusion ending with a spine-tingling cliff hanger.

There have been five reincarnations of the redoubtable Doctor. who has two hearts. a body temperature of 60 degrees and travels around in a TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions In Space) machine which looks suspiciously like a London police call box.

Three of the Doctors have been featured in the episodes shown on stations of the University of North Carolina Center for Public Television. Tom Baker is the most familiar, with his long knitted scarf and passion for Jelly babies (jelly beans to us Yanks). Then came Peter Davison, known to many viewers for his portrayal of Tristan on All Creatures Great and Small. He Is the most recent actor to star in the series in England. This summer North Carolina became one of the first places in the country to air episodes starring Jon Pertwee who preceded Baker in the role in the early 1970's in England. Pertwee plays the doctor as a debonair sophisticate in evening clothes and cape.

Those three actors, and the two others who preceded them in the role, will be featured in a special birthday show The Five Doctors, which airs Wednesday Nov 23. at 10 pm.. and repeats Saturday Nov 26 at 2 pm.

Also, Whovians can watch all three incarnations of the Time Lord each week this month. The Pertwee episodes are airing week nights at II. the Baker episodes are shown as The Doctor Who Movie on Saturday afternoons at 2. and new Davison episodes are airing Sunday evenings at 7 pm.
