COMEDIAN Jon Pertwee told his children yesterday that he is to be television's new Dr. Who.
He was met with the immediate question: "Can we meet a Garlick ?"
They meant, of course, Dalek. But with Daniel, eight. and Sean, five, it's the horrible thought that counts.
Pertwee, the "man of a thousand voices," is taking over as Dr. Who from Patrick Troughton.
Troughton, who wants to return to the live theatre after three years in "Dr. Who." will quit the role at the end of tonight's episode — the last in the present series.
Battle
Viewers will see him lose his battle against the current villains, the Time Lords. They call him to Earth.
That's where Pertwee comes in — when the serial returns to children's TV next January.
Pertwee's Dr. Who will be losing the familiar frock coat and baggy trousers that have been part of the character since the series started back in l963.
And producer Peter Bryant, says that the programme will be "less childish" in future.
But the new Dr. Who will still encounter such familiar horrors as the Yetis, the Quarks, the Cybermen and—worst of all— the Garlicks.
