DR. WHO took another bashing yesterday from Mrs. Mary Whitehouse.

The intrepid T V campaigner said the BBC show is now too horrific to be screened before 9.0 p.m.

She said: "Dr. Who has moved from fantasy to real-life violence.

"Cruelty, corpses, poison gas, Nazi-type stormtroops and revolting experiments in human genetics are served up as teatime brutality for the tots."

Mrs. Whitehouse urged the the current series should be specially shown to the Annan inquiry into broadcasting.

She said it would "illustrate how far removed are the BBC's pious platitudes about violence in children's TV from the actuality of its programmes."

And she accused the BBC of "cynical opportunism" in trying to attract any adult viewers available at 5.30 p.m. on a Saturday.

A BBC spokesman said: "Dr. Who is not designed for intelligent young people from ten onwards.

"The present adventures are set in the year 30,000 and Dr. Who has two hearts, If that's not fantasy, what is?

"I watch with my son of 12 and the programme has not become more horrific, If the Annan inquiry wants a special showing we will certainly consider it."

In January, Mrs. Whitehouse claimed that Dr. Who was giving under-sevens nightmares and causing them to wet the bed.
