After five years of hair-raising adventures - eyebrow hair, to be exact - one of the most popular Doctors since Tom Baker is giving up the TARDIS.
Premiering tonight, Parts 1 and 2 of Doctor Who: The End of Time, deliver more explosions than New Year's fireworks.
That the David Tennant Doctor would die and regenerate into the 11th doctor, Matt Smith, has been known for quite some time, and the Doctor himself has been aware of his impending demise since it was prophesied in The Planet of the Dead.
It will also be the last Doctor Who story written by Russell T. Davies, who shepherded the sci-fi cult favourite's return to British television in 2005, and has since served as the series' executive producer and chief writer. He will be replaced by Steven Moffat.
Bernard Cribbins, who appeared in the story Voyage of the Damned and throughout Series 4 as Wilfred Mott, grandfather of Donna Noble, acts as a companion to the Doctor in this two-part story. The special features the return of many other actors to the show, including Catherine Tate, Jacqueline King, John Simm and John Barrowman.
The story also showcases the Time Lords, returning as a civilization for the first time since The Trial of a Time Lord in 1986.
Doctor Who is listed in Guinness World Records as the longest-running sci-fi TV show in the world (it first aired in 1963), and as the most successful sci-fi series of all time, measured in overall broadcast ratings, DVD sales, book sales and iTunes traffic, as well as illegal downloads. It broke ground with its low-budget special effects, use of electronic music - one of my earliest TV memories is dashing to the den at the first "dum-de-dum-de-dum" of the theme music - and, of course, its imaginative, even bizarre, stories.
To prime viewers for the final chapter of Tennant's tenure as the Doctor, a Doctor Who marathon precedes it, with re-airings of The Next Doctor, Planet the Dead and The Waters of Mars.
Doctor Who: The End of Time, Part 1, SPACE, 8 p.m.; Part 2, 9:20 p.m. The Doctor Who Marathon begins at 4 p.m.
