MILLIONS know her as Susan, the 15-year-old schoolgirl in 'Dr. Who'. Actually Carole Ann Ford is 22, married and the mother of a three-year-old daughter. Miranda.

There is obviously a danger in becoming too closely identified with a character in a television serial, particularly when that character is a child. Miss Ford recognises this, and much as she enjoys the variety which the serial offers, she will leave the cast in October, when her year's contract expires.

Carole Ann already has tremendous experience in stage, television and films. She made her professional début with a tour of Women of the Streets at the ripe old age of 16. Four years ago she played Ned's sister Kate in the Stratford East presentation of Ned Kelly.

This work with Joan Littlewood she describes as among the most beneficial productions in a stage career which includes Expreso Bong at the Saville Theatre.

Her first big cinema break was as Adam Faith's girl friend in Mix Me a Person. Then came The Day of the Triffids with Howard Keel. A wealth of television work includes Dixon of Dock Green and Moonstrike and last September and she appeared in the BBC Suspense play Man on a Bicycle with Alan Browing and Kenneth Mackintosh.

Her current television ambition is to play Anne Frank. Anne Frank, of course, was 14. Which, give a year or so, is where we came in.
