Peter Davison, the fifth time lord in TV's Doctor Who, is coming to Melbourne.

Davison will present the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular live on stage at the Melbourne Convention Centre's Plenary hall on January 31 and February 1.

The London-born actor, who played the world's favourite TV time lord between 1981 and 1984, returned to his old cricket blazer for a cameo spot at the Doctor Who Proms at Royal Albert Hall in July.

"The great thing about these concerts is that we show clips from Doctor Who and the orchestra plays the music from those clips live," he said. "I just love the idea that it's a way of getting younger people, especially, into a concert hall and having them hear music played by a full orchestra."

A new four-CD set, Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Collection, charts the series' remarkable musical evolution from the pioneering electronic experiments of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to a range of noted composers including Australian Dudley Simpson.

The MSO's Doctor Who Symphonic Spectacular will focus on the recent orchestral scores of Murray Gold, with sequences starring 11th Doctor Matt Smith, specially filmed interludes with fourth Doctor Tom Baker and flashbacks to past Doctors and villains.
