Dr. Who?

Yes, "Dr. Who" fans, it's John Pertwee, the third of seven actors to play Dr. Who. He's in town this weekend to meet and greet fans of the long-running science-fiction TV series and to support Channel 8.

Gather 'round the invisible wave band receiver (your television) at 8:30 tonight for a 6 1/2-hour marathon of "Dr. Who" episodes, including Pertwee's last as the good doctor, "Planet of Spiders. "Pertwee will also appear between episodes for an interview by Betsy Ballard, news director for KLTR (93.7 FM) radio.

Dr. Who is a Timelord, a master of time and space, who travels the universe in bizarre adventures. The British-made programs are something of an acquired taste: Not everyone appreciates their wacky nature, low-budget production and rather casual acting. But for those who are true Whovian believers, the show is a cult favorite.

Pertwee is on a national "Dr. Who" tour, and with him is a 48-foot truck-trailer containing memorabilia from the show. You can visit with all the series' monsters and villains noon-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday outside the Marriott Astrodome, 2100 S. Braeswood. Admission is $8.

There is also a Dr. Who dinner banquet 5-8 p.m. today at the Marriott to benefit KUHT. Tickets are $60. For information or reservations, call 748-8888.

Spelling correction: Jon Pertwee
