ACTRESS Mary Tamm had a tough time starring in tonight's spy thriller, The Assassination Run.

But the sequel, The Treachery Game, a three-part BBC 1 series to be screened next January, proved even more nerve-racking.

Mary, 30, ended up deafened, drenched, dirty and dismayed.

She says: "In The Assassination Run, I had to learn to fire a revolver.

BLAST

"It fired blanks, but I still found pulling the trigger frightening.

"In The Treachery Game, I had to use a shotgun.

"This was far worse, because the blast had a 12ft spread.

"The whole studio was cleared when I pulled the trigger, and the noise and smoke terrified me. After that, I had to fall into a pool of mud, and I was completely covered in the filthy stuff.

"I had to do it three times before the director was satisfied!

"Then I had to stay looking wet and muddy. "So the director had water poured over every hour or two."

KIDNAP

In The Assassination Run (BBC 1, 9.25), Mary —who is married and has a nine-month-old daughter, Lauren—plays the part of Jill Fraser, a wife kinapped by terrorists.

In tonight's second episode Jill's husband Mark (Malcolm Stoddard) is forced to face an agonising decision: Should he kill to free his wife?
