Will chilling new series Sea of Souls (see p21) match up to your all-time creepiest shows? William Gallagher peeps through his fingers at our petrifying poll results ..

How will Sea of Souls measure up to the best that TV's had to throw at us? At Radio Times, we turned the lights down low, shone torches up at our faces and freaked each other out with stories of the

television that most spooked us. Then we put our list to you at www.radiotimes.com and more than 2,000 of you voted for the shows that most creepily messed with your minds.

The biggest surprise was that The X-Files only came second. Apparently you can never forget a happy face, as the demonic clown in Stephen King's It has stuck with you more than 200 hours of Mulder, Scully and the other guy's best efforts have.

But it seems it's a case of once spooked, never forgotten, as the BBC's fake paranormal documentary Ghostwatch commanded third place, despite not having been repeated since its airing 12 years ago.

(And if you're wondering where Doctor Who is, we know it could do spooky, but as it walks away with every poll it figures in, we awarded it a Certificate of Advanced Spookiness and left it off the list to give the others a chance.)
