[edit]

DOCTOR Who has lost more than two and a half million viewers since Christopher Eccleston announced he was quitting.

The second episode of the new series attracted an average of 7.3million viewers compared to 9.9million last week.

But the Timelord's adventures still beat Ant and Dec whose show, featuring Tony Blair, was watched by 6million.

Eccleston is quitting as the Doctor after one series to avoid getting typecast.

Many fans were furious, raising fears of a backlash.

But the BBC insisted Eccleston's announcement had not affected ratings.

It said: "We expect viewing figures for an episode after a big launch to drop slightly. But the show has fantastic storylines and people have been waiting 16 years to see them."
