Sabalon Glitz, "Orpheum"/"Zoroaster" (Trixie Records) ★★★1/2
Albini also produced the debut single by Sabalon Glitz, a quartet that emerged from the circle of University of Chicago slackers who staff WHPK-FM (88.5) and publish the Baffler.
The group takes its name from a character on "Dr. Who" and bases its sound on the trippy, free-form experiments of early '70s psychedelic art-rockers Hawkwind and Amon Duul. It's an enticing, mysterious, droning sound, but one that can initially be hard to pin down.
I listened with pleasure to the A-side space jam three or four times before realizing I was playing it at the wrong speed. (It sounded even better at 33 1/3 r.p.m.) The B-side is a more aggressive pop-punk tune that highlights Carla Bruce's cutting vocals.
