The hunt is on for some of Britain's lost treasures, classic TV gems which are missing believed wiped.
They include episodes of famous programmes like Dr Who, The Likely Lads, Till Death Us Do Part, Opportunity Knocks, Sunday Night at the London Palladium, Emergency Ward 10 and even the first News at Ten from the summer of 1967
The British Film Institute hopes they are out there somewhere and today launched a campaign to track down those that have disappeared, anxious that they have not been erased or destroyed.
Already diligent researchers have found classic comedy, drama, the music and science fiction thought to survive only in the collective memory of a fund public.
Shows like Steptoe and Son, Z Cars and Dr Who are now safely back in archive collections after trawls through filing cabinets, derelict studios, rubbish tips, redundant companies and boot sales.
Patrons of the project to locate 20 key lost programmes include TV stalwarts Michael Grade, Thora Hird, Denis Norden, Barry Took and Michael Palin, who says: "Many of these programmes are not only classics in themselves but reflect the life, spirit and preoccupations of the country at a given time."
