Trapped inside the spaceship "Tardis" with the controls refusing to respond, four time travellers are whisked back to the days of Marco Polo in a new series of adventures on Doctor Who, beginning Wednesday, April 21, at 5 p.m. on the CBC-TV network.
The Tardis, damaged and out of fuel—its passengers out of food and water—lands on the Pamir plateau in Central Asia, the Roof of the World.
Doctor Who, his granddaughter Susan, and their two reluctant passengers, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, leave the ship in search of food and meet up with Tegana, a Tartar warlord.
Tegana takes them to the camp of Marco Polo, the Venetian emissary of Kublai Khan, ruler of Cathay. Polo decides that Doctor Who's space "box" would be an excellent gift for the Khan and forces the travellers to accompany him on the march which turns out to be a nightmare adventure.
William Hartnell plays Dr. Who, with Carole Ann Ford as Susan. William Russell plays Chesterton and Jacqueline Hill, Barbara Wright. Mark Eden plays Marco Polo and Derren Nesbitt is Tegana. Martin Miller appears as Kublai Khan.
