New Doc won't be flirting with assistant, says Capaldi

SCOTS actor Peter Capaldi has vowed the new Doctor won't flirt with his beautiful young assistant when The Time Lord returns next time month.

The 56-year-old has ruled out a Doctor Who romance with Clara Oswald, played by stunning Jenna Coleman, 28.

Peter 's predecessors Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith all seemed to be attracted to their female sidekicks.

Peter said: "It's not what this Doctor's concerned with.

"It's quite a fun relationship, but no, I did call and say, 'I want no Papa-Nicole moment'" - a reference to the 90s Renault Clio advert which gave the impression of a romance between an older man and younger woman before revealing they are father and daughter.

Peter reveals the 12th Doctor will be nothing like foul-foulmouthed spin doctor mouthed Malcolm Tucker, who he played in award-winning political comedy series The Thick of It.

He said: "This Doctor loves watching stars being born in Andromeda. He's also thrilled to see litter blowing across the supermarket car park at dawn. He's joyful."

The Glaswegian actor has been a fan of the show since it was first shown in 1963.

He created sets from shoeboxes and collected autographs of three of the first four incarnations.

His mum sent him a Doctor Who annual every Christmas even when he was an adult.

But he didn't accept the part immediately. He said: "I didn't want to be a Doctor Who in a Doctor Who I didn't like. I also had to think carefully about the level of visibility. People spoke to me before and recognised me but nothing like this.

"I had to decide if I was ready to live with that, because if the genie is out of the bottle, it doesn't go back in."

The new Doctor has a new look. The tweed and bow tie has been replaced with Dr Martens, black trousers and overcoat.

Capaldi said: "In black you can make these spidery shapes. It's like German expressionism or 60s caricatures. They're very graphic lines."

The new series of Doctor Who begins on Saturday, August 23.
