DOCTOR Who is still a timeless favourite.

The new series of the 51-yearold UK science fiction television show premieres on New Zealand screens tonight.

And the Kiwi "No 1 Doctor Who fan" says Academy Awardwinning Scottish actor Peter Capaldi, who plays the 12th Doctor, could be the "best ever".

"I love him, he's great. Capaldi's a lifelong Doctor Who fan himself. He understands how Doctor Who should be played," Paul Scoones told Sunday News.

Scoones, who's seen the special feature-length episode premiere at the movies, says his fellow New Zealand Doctor Who Fan Club members have been "pretty positive" about Capaldi.

Scoones, the club's president, says choosing 56-year-old Capaldi was "quite a reversal" for the BBC series. The 11th Doctor, English actor Matt Smith, was 27 when he started the role of the Time Lord who zips around the universe in his time-travelling Tardis space ship saving civilisations.

But Scoones, a sci-fi merchandise retailer, points out: "The Doctor's 2000 years old ... anyway."

The Doctor's greatest enemies, the Daleks, have been fans' loveto-hate favourites since the start of the television series.

The extraterrestrial cyborgs, complete with their "Ex-ter-minate!" catchcry, are still in demand with younger Kiwi audiences.

Students from Takapuna Grammar, on Auckland's North Shore, have even press-ganged a couple of them into their fashion show at the Bruce Mason Centre.

Scoones says in the new Doctor Who series, the intergalactic killbots are getting an upgrade.

"The Daleks hover," he whispers.

premieres tonight, 7.30, Prime TV.
