[edit]

TIME Lord Doctor Who will emerge from his Tardis machine again as Queensland fans of the science fiction show celebrate the 30th anniversary this week. On November 23, 1963, a program called Doctor Who first appeared on British television. Seven doctors and 26 seasons later, the TV series ended.

That first show was delayed by 25 minutes due to the BBC news over-running with news of the previous day's assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Its popularity and longevity were unmatched and Doctor Who became the world's longest-running science fiction series and an institution.

The Brisbane Doctor Who Fan Club, with 200 members, will tune into their TV sets this week as the ABC broadcasts five special episodes at 6pm each day.

Diehards regularly get up at 4.30am for repeats, but most use their video recorders to tape the shows they have not already seen hundreds of times.

Club president Mark Jones, who rated third doctor Jon Pertwee as the best, said fans remained ever-hopeful that the BBC would resume the hit series.

Club members will mark the 30th anniversary with a Brisbane River cruise on the Kookaburra Queen on Friday, then a club meeting on December 5.
