THE Daleks, Cybermen and Sea Devils were put on notice last night after the BBC named Christopher Eccleston as the new Dr Who.

The Salford-born actor, 40, will step into the Tardis for a new 13-episode series to be shown on BBC One next year, nearly 16 years since the Time Lord last appeared regularly on the nation's screens.

A BBC spokesman said that Eccleston, known for films such as Shallow Grave and the ITV drama The Second Corning, would bring a "fresh and modem approach" to the ninth Doctor. Jane Tranter, the BBC controller of drama commissioning, said: "We are delighted to have cast an actor of such calibre in one of British TV's most iconic roles."

Actors including Bill Nighy, Eddie Izzard and Alan Davies had been rumoured for the role, which in the past has been played by Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison and Tom Baker, among others.
