FROM JASON SOLOMONS IN CANNES

IT'S enough to test even a Time Lord's resolve: The BBC is considering risking the wrath of millions of Dr Who fans by him a woman.

The series will be given the £12.5million treatment in a film which will bring the show up to date with computer graphics and political correctness.

Announcing the BBC's future projects in Cannes yesterday, head of films David Thompson, revealed: "We are anxious to make the film work and it's clear the format needs modernising. We are considering making the Doctor a female, because that is very possible these days. We are not ruling anything out at this stage."

Talks began last week on the new film which is also likely to dispense with the Tardis.

However, Mr Thompson also revealed that the BBC will be attempting to buy the rights to the Daleks, the only Who property they do not own.

They belong to the estate of late Who creator Terry Nation.
