John Barrowman

The Scottish-American entertainer and star of Torchwood and Doctor Who takes a moment from a whirlwind book tour to share his menu

'I was up at 3am for a GMTV interview and didn't get breakfast until 9am. I had scrambled eggs, buttered toast, jam and Marmite, which I adore, at the Radisson Blue in Covent Garden.

'I'm not an elevenses kind of person, so the next thing I ate at around 1.30pm, following interviews at Broadcasting House, was a toasted bacon and turkey club sandwich with lettuce and tomato washed down with water from the big bottle I carry with me at all times.

'For dinner, big sister and co-author Carole and I dined on steak and chips, tomato and salad with a vodka and soda - or maybe two or three - for me.

'This menu isn't typical of what I eat normally. At home - in the US with Scott [Gill, John's husband] - we usually cook from scratch and steer away from processed foods. I do a mean roast duck with garlic and red wine sauce and an Italian sausage casserole with mashed potatoes. I'm a big Waitrose fan, and when I'm in the US, I especially miss their sausages.

'I eat anything within reason. But when Carole and I sit down to plan a book, it's a fest of crisps, Jelly Tots and wine.'

John and Carole Barrowman's new supernatural thriller Conjuror (Head Of Zeus, f12) is out now

The verdict

Emma Williams, Waitrose nutritionist, says

'An early morning snack would've given you energy and kickstarted your metabolism. To up your fluid, opt for a morning drink and snack on fruit to up your 5 a day. You ate lots of protein but if you swap red/processed meats for lentils, beans or peas, you'll reduce your saturated fat intake and increase your fibre. Try to keep an eye on your alcohol intake.'
