Fantasy war games, medieval duelling, science fiction writing and cult videos are among the events scheduled for Alternate Realities Day on Saturday.

An open house from noon to 6 p.m. at James Bay community school centre, 140 Oswego St., will feature a writers' workshop, sales of collectibles, art displays and a costume competition. Admission is $1.

The Cygnus Science Society will hold a dance starting at 8 p.m. Admission is $3 for singles, $5 for couples. Victoria writers Julian Reid, Dale Sproule and Michael Coney, author of Cat Karina, The Celestial Steel Locomotive and God of the Greataway, will attend a workshop sponsored by the University of Victoria's Imaginative Fiction Society.

The Keepers of the Key to Time will show videos of the British cult television show Dr. Who.

The Society for Creative Anachronism will perform medieval music and dances, and its "knights" will give two demonstrations of medieval fighting techniques.

Members of the Bardic Union will read poetry and sing during the open house.

The Fellowship of Scarlet Rogues, a fantasy war-gaming club specializing in Dungeons and Dragons, will run games which the public may play.

Paul Winstanley, whose Solar Visions Foundation presented the government-funded prism-light show in the Beacon Hill Park pavilion last summer, will demonstrate light-painting as an art form.

The Saanich International Folk-dancers will perform at 3 p.m. and Star Trek videos will be shown by the USS Kestrel, a Vancouver Star Trek club.

The Science Fiction Association of Victoria, a local science fiction and fantasy-oriented club, will also take part in the open house.
