Nashville's public television station, WDCN-Channel 8, reported yesterday that initial tallies from its "10 Nights in August" membership drive now total $60,297, more than $5,000 over the station's designated goal.
One major surprise of the just-completed drive, according to promotion director Andrew Davis, was the response of "Dr. Who" fans during seven pledge breaks on two successive Saturday nights. More than $10,500 was raised by fans of the "Who" show, which, Davis said bluntly, "is a lot of money."
"Dr. Who" had been scheduled for the axe and was not slated for renewal in December, but Davis said the con-cern—and financial backing—from fans "will definitely influence" the station's programming manager.
"It's an expensive series for us," Davis said, "and until we got this response we didn't have an indication of its popularity."
Also pulling in big bucks for the station was "Sesame Street," which raised more than $5,000 during its pledge breaks, a feat which Davis called "remarkable, considering that two of those breaks were between 7 and 8 a.m. Sunday morning."
