The Doctor Who Music Invasion

It's amazing how many TV soundtrack albums reach the stores after the series has gone off the air. Since the three decade-old BBC-TV serial Doctor Who went on hiatus almost four years ago, no less than 12 CDs and two audiocassette sets have appeared, featuring a variety of subjects that should appeal to fans of this SF legend.

England's Silva Screen Records have released quite a collection of music. By far the best sampling is from their domestic counterpart Silva America's compilation The Best of Doctor Who Volume 1: The Five Doctors (SSD 1014). The choice tracks from the early 1980 two-volume BBC Records set, Doctor Who: The Music, has been reassembled and remastered. Most of the episode music comes from the Peter Davison era. Complete re-issues of the BBC albums are available as Silva Screen imports, Earthshock (FILMCD 709) and The Five Doctors (FILMCD 710).

Fans of the Fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, can find music from his first season on Pyramids of Mars: Doctor Who Music by Dudley Simpson (FILMCD 134). Heathcliff Blair, re-creates five classic scores in suites that includes "Genesis of the Daleks." Representing the work of the last Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, are three score albums by composer Mark Ayres, Doctor Who: The Curse of Fenric (FILMCD 087), Doctor Who: The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (FILMCD 114), and Doctor Who: Ghost Light (FILMCD 133). Ayres joined series composers Dominic Glynn and Keff McCulloch on Doctor Who—Variations on a Theme (FILMCD 706) for four interpretations of the signature tune each performed for the annual convention, "Panopticon." Now rare is the BBC Records compilation from McCoy's first season, The Doctor Who 25th Anniversary Album (BBC CD 707).

For those who like audio drama, Silva has reissued the original Tom Baker/Elisabeth Sladen audio drama Doctor Who and the Pescatons (FILMCD 707). The BBC Radio Collection has available two cassette sets. The first is Doctor Who: Evil of the Daleks (ISBN 0-553-47164), adapted from the original audiotapes of Patrick Troughton's lost TV serial. Tom Baker narrates and stars in half of the second set, Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks & Slipback (ISBN 0-563-225572). The Dalek tape is a re-issue of the original soundtrack story album first released in 1979. "Slipback" is the original radio drama starring Colin Baker (Doctor #6) and Nicola Bryant (Peri). Both cassette sets are available domestically from local bookstores.

Want to annoy the neighbors? Play the sound FX albums! Doctor Who: 30 Years at the Radiophonic Workshop (BBC CD 871) features more than 80 effects from the series and some music. Essential Science Fiction Sound Effects Volume 1 (BBC CD 847) has 15 effects from the 1980 series along with 15 effects from the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio dramas and 20 from Blake's 7.

But Where Can I Get Them? Many albums and CDs can be ordered direct from you local music dealer. For those odd imports, you may be able to mail order them through Intrada Records, 1488 Vallejo Street, San Francisco, CA 94109, (415) 776-1333, or Footlight Records, 113 East 12th Street, New York, NY 10003, (212) 533-1572. Tell them STARLOG sent you.
