[edit]

It's Doctor Who times three Saturday night on Channel 34.

Three episodes that trace the 20-year history of the British series, about a mysterious man who travels through time and space in a device that looks strangely like a phone booth, will be shown beginning at 8:30 p.m. during the last day of the public television station's "pledge-free December" drive.

First up is "The Evolution of Doctor Who," which traces the beginnings of the longest-running science fiction series in the world, produced by the British Broadcasting Corp.

Following that is a 90-minute special, "The Five Doctors," in which Peter Davison is joined by his predecessors, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. The original "Doctor," the late William Hartnell, is seen briefly in vintage footage, but his role in this episode is filled by Richard Hurdnall.

The storyline follows a reunion that takes place on the planet Gallifrey and features many of the Doctor's adversaries and monsters he has battled during the years.

The finale, about 10 p.m., is the "Robot" episode, with Tom Baker as the Doctor and colleague Sarah Jane Smith doing battle against a gigantic robot.

During the pledge break, Channel 34 fundraiers will be sharing Doctor Who trivia sent in by area "Whovians." A drawing for exclusive Doctor Who merchandise also will be held during the evening.
