TORONTO (CP) — TVOntario, the provincial educational broadcast network. has cancelled six instalments of the British science fiction scries Dr. Who because a Chinese-Canadian group says they are racist.
The Chinese-Canadian National Council for Equality says the shows, called the Talons of Weng-Chian, are dangerous, offensive, racist stereotyping (which) associate the Chinese with everything fearful and despicable."
Dr. Joseph Wong, council president, said the instalments, part of a series produced by the BBC for the last 16 years, include everything from an evil Fu Manchu character to pigtailed coolies and laundrymen who submissively commit suicide on their master's orders."
