New Toy For The Christmas
Irvine was featured on the 8.8.C. Scottish programmes on Monday night by the appearance of the manager of D.M. Plastics Ltd., a firm that has been in operation In the Industrial Estate for some time.
The subject under review was life sized models of "The Daleks" —the monsters from outer space who appear on the T.V. series "Dr Who."
The firm's usual output consists of motor and industrial components and this new enterprise is intended for the Christmas market. For this the firm have already doubled their labour force.
This venture has all come about in the course of a few weeks. The firm were asked if they could turn out plastic domes, radar eyes, probes and other parts for Oft. 61ns. Daleks. They sought the aid of Irvine Town Council for additional factory and storage accommodation and found the council most willing to meet their wants in this connection. New specialised equipment was designed in a matter of days; erectors and engineers worked round the clock getting new plant ready and in a matter of days work for an extra 23 girls and 2 men was provided.
Mr A. Westbrook, a director of D.M. Plastics, said this has all come about without interfering in any way with normal production, which is for car manufacturers in Scotland and the Midlands of England. What had really happened was that the coming of the Daleks was a stepping stone in the bigger production being planned. They still required more space but that would be fully on the way next year. They were hopeful that the new departure might lead to yet another development.
Mr Westbrook has already installed one of the first of these space age monsters in his own home and his two young daughters are simply entranced with it.
This is heatening news for Irvine and we wish D.M. Plastics every success in their enterprise.
