Jon Pertwee Celebrates 60 Years In Showbusiness
Food File (C4, 8.30pm)
IMPISH Jon Pertwee had Wogan and a group of his pals choking over their drinks at The Garrick Club.
The former Dr Who was quietly munching his way through a packet of strangelooking delicacies when the curious Wogan caught his eye.
"Terry and his chums asked me what I was eating and I told them I was trying out a new type of cocktail savoury and offered them around.
"You should have seen their faces when I revealed they were eating crickets - although they tasted delicious cooked with onion and garlic and a touch of Tabasco."
Jon was given them while investigating kitchen creepy crawlies for tonight's Food File.
Although he is not often seen on the box these days, the the debonair white -haired star still appears in radio adventures.
It is 20 years since he appeared in Dr Who but he is still a big draw at sci -fi conventions.
He says he is not surprised that 36-year-old Paul McGann has been given the role in the lavish new pounds 3 million TV movie - but he has mixed feelings about the good doctor's role involving sex for the first time.
"It goes against the spirit of the original series but it was obvious when they cast a handsome young man they would involve him in romance. I don't know what kids will make of it. It's a sign of the times I guess," sighs 76 -year-old Jon.
He is celebrating 60 years in showbusiness, during which he presented Sunday Night At The London Palladium, starred in the Carry On movies, worked on radio in The Navy Lark and proved a kiddies' favourite in Worzel Gummidge.
"Now I travel around the country doing my one-man show shamelessly dropping names," admits Jon, who called his autobiography Moon Boots And Dinner Suits.
His son Sean, 30, and daughter Dariel, 32, have both followed in his footsteps as actors. Jon says he always gave them simple advice: "Speak up, make yourself heard - and don't bump into the furniture..."
