WASHINGTON — The star of Britain's most successful television program, the science fiction "Doctor Who," traded in his spacecraft for a truck yesterday as actors from the show began their North American tour on the National Mall.

"It's the beginning of the tour any place in the galaxy," said Joyce Campbell, a spokeswoman for WETA Public television which carries the program, as British Broadcasting Corporation representatives unveiled its 48-foot "Who-Mobile."

"The truck is a little gift from the Timelords of Gallifrey to the people of Washington, D.C.," Peter Davison, the actor who plays the fifth Doctor Who, proclaimed to about 200 dedicated fans.

The television series follows the doctor, a Time Lord born on the planet Gallifrey, for 23 years as he travels through the galaxy in the TARDIS spacecraft.

"When the history of television comes to be written, I think there will be a whole chapter devoted to the phenomenon of Doctor Who," said Michael Gray, programming head of BBC. "It's one of our greatest exports."
