DOCTOR Who veteran Elizabeth Sladen has blasted the BBC for creating "cardboard" characters in the classic 70s editions of the series.

Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith alongside Doctors Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker from 1973 to 1976, is returning to the BBC1 show on April 29. But she said: "Sarah Jane used to be a bit of a cardboard cut-out.

"Each week it used to be, 'Yes Doctor, no Doctor', and you had to flesh your character out in your mind - because if you didn't, no one else would."

Now writer Russell T Davies has ensured Sarah Jane plays a much more integral part in the story.

The actress, 58, said: "The new show is much more realistic. I am thrilled that the BBC realises the companion has an effect on the ratings."

Tom Baker left Sarah Jane in Croydon with robot dog K-9. She reappears in an episode called School Reunion - with a run-down K-9 in tow.
