Those legions of loyal 'Dr Who' fans who set up such a chorus of protest when the ABC last dropped the popular sci-fi series, should he delighted to learn that the programme will return to Channel 2 in March.

An ABC spokesman said yesterday that the first 28 episodes, all new, would feature the popular Tom Baker as Dr Who. Peter Davison will replace him for 26 more episodes.

Davison, who took over the role of the Time Lord last year, is best known to Australian viewers as Tristan Farnon in the BBC series 'All Creatures Great and Small'.

Helping Davison in his mission to save the universe from further calamity will be a Brisbane-born actress, Jane Fielding, who plays an obliging air hostess.

Since the series began In 1963, five Dr Whos have travelled back and forth in time from that police public telephone booth, with a succession of women helpers.
